Application of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are one of the best and most effective solutions for teeth you are dissatisfied with. For example, discolored or cracked teeth are two common reasons people turn to veneers. In short, veneers are artificial tooth coverings that make your teeth look white and natural–as if they are your real healthy teeth. While many different solutions are available such as crowns, implants and bridges, veneers are extremely popular and a solid long-term option.

Veneers typically come in two types; porcelain and composite, both of which improve your smile but differ in how they are made and work. Here’s everything you need to know about the application of porcelain veneers.

Preparation

Teeth must be prepped before a veneer can be fixed. The preparation stage involves smoothing and reshaping your teeth’s surface. This is to remove any plaque or tartar that could prevent the veneers from bonding with the natural tooth. This must be thorough so your dentist can take a mould of your teeth and custom fit your veneers perfectly. Afterwards, teeth will be etched slightly to increase surface area and create a stronger bond.

Restoring Minor Tooth Defects

Before veneers can be applied, removing minor defects in your teeth is vital. You may want veneers for aesthetic reasons; defects must be addressed so your veneers attach securely and won’t affect their longevity. Veneers need a smooth, solid surface to be securely cemented to your natural teeth. Dental imperfections must be repaired for this to happen correctly. If a large portion of the tooth has wear or damage, teeth must be resurfaced before the veneer can be attached.

Give Stained Fillings a New Look

Before installing veneers, your dentist may need to remove and replace old fillings. This is because fillings are easily stained and wear over time. Veneers, in contrast, are significantly more durable as they are made from long-lasting, highly resistant material. Porcelain won’t stain, which is a huge advantage of having veneers, but despite this, you must maintain great dental hygiene afterwards.

Making Color Changes for Teeth

One of your main motivations for getting veneers may be achieving a bright, beautiful white smile. But did you know making colour changes to your teeth beforehand is critical before you even get the veneers? Over time, natural teeth discolour naturally through use, known as fluorosis staining. If your teeth are yellowed, it’s common to have a whitening treatment before getting your veneers. This lightens the teeth, so your veneers are made in a matching colour. If your teeth aren’t particularly discoloured, there is no need for the pre-whitening treatment.

Quick Orthodontic Fixes

You may need orthodontic treatment before getting veneers if your teeth are severely damaged or misaligned. If gaps and displacement are too drastic, it is tricky to fit veneers and have them look great, which is the sole purpose. If your teeth are crooked, your dentist may recommend a series of orthodontic treatments before fitting. Whereas if your gaps are minor, veneers can be done immediately–closing gaps and restoring that perfect white smile.

Whitening a Person’s Smile

Once the veneers are in place, aligned and ready, your dentist will activate the chemical required to activate the bonding process. Using lighting, your dentist will trigger the cement to harden and bond with your teeth. Now for the finishing touches. This is where excess cement is removed, ensuring the fit is comfortable and you have complete function. Typically you’ll go for follow-up visits to ensure everything is going smoothly. Otherwise, you’re set for years to come, as porcelain veneers have a lifespan of 10-20 years.

Application of Porcelain Veneers – Summary

Veneers are one of the best solutions to cracked, discoloured or teeth you are dissatisfied with. They give the appearance of perfect teeth, bringing the shine back to your smile, and restoring your confidence. While veneers are more costly compared to crowns, they are more affordable than implants and still a great long-term option.
